Description
Aim of the proposal is to investigate the characters and consequences of the 1918-1919 influenza pandemic in Tuscany local settings, comparing them with national quantitative and qualitative data, and with similar experiences abroad. The methodological approach is interdisciplinary, connecting demographic and health statistics with social, cultural, and political history. The research will explore the echo of the pandemic in the local and Italian newspapers and magazines, and the debates in Florence and other municipal council and the acts of the town administration, in order to reconstruct the attitudes and the behaviours of the people faced with the contagion, the institutional responses and policies in front of the pandemic, the memories-legacies left by the emergency, with a special focus on gender relations.
