AU-EU Innovation Agenda: Advancing EU-Africa Scientific Cooperation and the New Africa Initiative IV

As part of the CRUI event “AU-EU Innovation Agenda – Cooperazione scientifica con l’Africa”, held last 21 May, Dr. Vincenzo Lorusso, Policy Officer for European-African Cooperation at the European Commission’s DG Research and Innovation, delivered a keynote presentation. In his speech, titled “The Positive Agenda of the EU-Africa Cooperation on Research & Innovation”, the speaker illustrated the state of the art and the future of strategic cooperation between Europe and Africa in the research sector. Dr. Lorusso highlighted the immense potential of Science Diplomacy, outlining the milestones and pillars of the AU-EU Innovation Agenda: public health, green transition, technological innovation, and capacities for science.

During the presentation, operational milestones achieved and upcoming crucial steps were also showcased, including the launch of the new “Africa Initiative IV”. This initiative is included in the Horizon Europe Framework Programme (2026-2027) with a strategic budget of approximately 500 million Euros dedicated to collaborative calls.

The “Africa Initiative IV” represents a major milestone in deepening the strategic partnership between the European Union and the African Union, fully aligned with the EU’s Global Gateway Africa-Europe Investment Package. Building on the success of previous editions—which have already supported over 300 projects—this new phase places a strong emphasis on driving tangible socio-economic impact. Funding will target key collaborative areas such as sustainable agriculture, clean energy, circular economy, and climate adaptation, with a specific focus on enhancing human capital by supporting young researchers and promoting gender equality in science.
