The project explores the integration of complementary indicators alongside current Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodologies, examining the link between nutritional and environmental dimensions, with a specific focus on biodiversity, soil health, circularity, and microplastic risk. The project works toward developing systematic approaches for environmental data collection and verification across the agri-food supply chain, fostering traceability, transparency, and reliability. EFL 2.0 adopts a phased and participatory approach developed through research, real-world experimentation, and communication initiatives. These activities are integrated with the continuous engagement of experts and stakeholders via technical working groups, surveys, and testing across various European countries to evaluate consumer understanding, trust, and behavior.
EFL 2.0 fits into the broader transition toward sustainable, healthy, and resilient food systems. Currently available environmental information on food products can present limitations regarding indicator completeness, methodological harmonization, result comparability, data collection costs, and consumer understanding. EFL 2.0 helps address these challenges by strengthening the scientific and operational framework of existing assessment tools while testing innovative approaches and complementary indicators. The entire process is guided by a “One Health” approach, acknowledging the interconnections between human health, ecosystem health, and production systems.

Objectives

The overall objective of EFL 2.0 is to contribute to the methodological enhancement of environmental assessment systems applied to food products in Europe. Specifically, the project develops and tests new environmental indicators to make assessments more aligned with the complexity of agricultural and food systems—incorporating currently underrepresented aspects such as biodiversity, soil health, circularity, and microplastic risk. Furthermore, it analyzes modes of integrating environmental and nutritional dimensions to explore representations that better align with the promotion of healthy and sustainable diets. Through testing, consultation, and experimentation, EFL 2.0 aims to generate evidence and policy recommendations while assessing the technical and operational feasibility of the developed solutions, thereby contributing to the scientific and institutional dialogue at the European level.
