PRIN 2026 call

DEADLINE: 1 June 2026, by 15:00

The Ministry of University and Research (MUR) has officially opened the PRIN 2026 (Progetti di Rilevante Interesse Nazionale) call. This initiative is a cornerstone of Italian public policy aimed at strengthening the national research system by supporting high-quality scientific projects and fostering structured collaboration between Universities, Public Research Institutions, and AFAM (Alta Formazione Artistica, Musicale e Coreutica) institutions.

The PRIN 2026 program is designed not only to enhance Italy’s scientific capital but also to promote a more balanced distribution of resources and expertise across the national territory. By encouraging excellence and inter-institutional cooperation, the call aims to tackle complex scientific challenges and consolidate the international standing of Italian research.

Each project must have a three-year duration and a total budget ranging between 1,000,000 and 1,200,000 euros. Research must be carried out by partnerships composed of a minimum of four and a maximum of six research units from different institutions, addressing scientific needs that exceed the operational and financial capacities of a single organization through structured and multidisciplinary cooperation.

The program is open to all research fields, organized according to the three European Research Council (ERC) macro-sectors: Life Sciences (LS), Physical Sciences and Engineering (PE), and Social Sciences and Humanities (SH). This structure ensures alignment with European standards and promotes the integration of the Italian research system into the international context. Each proposal is led by a Principal Investigator (PI), who coordinates the activities and ensures the overall coherence of the project. Notably, 15% of the available resources are specifically reserved for projects presented by Principal Investigators under the age of 40, supporting generational renewal and the contribution of young researchers.

Proposals must be submitted exclusively through the dedicated online platform: https://prin.mur.gov.it/.
