Fondazione Cariplo and Fondazione Telethon have launched a joint call for applications focused on basic research targeting “Tdark” targets in rare diseases.

The main objective of this call is to support basic research projects aiming to investigate molecular targets (genes/gene families, mRNA, and proteins) whose functions remain largely unknown or unexplored. The call covers rare diseases of both genetic (monogenic and polygenic) and non-genetic origin.

The initiative aims to promote high-impact scientific discoveries and enhance our understanding of fundamental biological mechanisms that could open new therapeutic avenues for rare conditions.

Applicants can choose between two distinct application formats based on the scope and maturity of their research:

• Pilot Applications are one-year, single-center exploratory projects aimed at generating initial data or tools, with a maximum budget of €50,000 (and an optional six-month no-cost extension); preliminary data are not strictly required for this track.
• Full Applications support more advanced, two-year research efforts requiring solid preliminary data, with funding up to €250,000 (and an optional one-year no-cost extension) for single-center or bi-center collaborative proposals.

Applicants (Lead and Partner) may submit only one research project in total across either format. Projects that actively foster the training and advancement of young researchers are strongly encouraged. Applicants must verify target eligibility using the Pharos Target Classification file available on the official call portal.
