Participation strengthens European identity? EUComMeet project will answer how

A research team led by Prof. Pierangelo Isernia, from the Department of Social, Political and Cognitive Sciences, coordinates the European project EUComMeet in which an international consortium is engaged in the development of online participation spaces in which groups of citizens, from five countries in Europe, will be able to interact through innovative approaches and technologies.

The EuComMeet project explores under which conditions deliberation and representation can be an effective “response to the challenges besetting liberal representative democracies”.
To tackle this challenge, the EUComMeet has a two-fold objectve-based strategy:
– Experimenting ways of systematically embedding deliberative practices and institutions in the multilevel system of governance and representation of the European Union;
– Exploring how deliberation and participation can help reduce polarization, strengthen European identity, encourage inclusiveness, foster citizens’ reflectivity and narrow the representative gap between policymakers and citizens.

This project has received three million euros in funding under the Horizon 2020 programme.
