An exhibition to understand war and think peace

As part of the permanent seminar “Understanding War, Thinking Peace. Against the Paralysis of Thought” included in the activities of the Department of Excellence “Historical Sciences and Cultural Heritage” and in collaboration with the student association Aula 1240, two planned initiatives will address the topic “War and the destruction of cultural heritage”.

The first will be held on Thursday, 1 February in the Santa Chiara Lab Auditorium and will entail the screening of the docufilm “The destruction of memory” by Tim Slade.

The second, scheduled for Thursday, 8 February, will be held in the Chiostro di San Galgano and consists in the inauguration of a photographic show entitled “Mosul”, with photos by architect Giovanni Fontana Antonelli. Participants will include lecturers and students from the Department, as well as external experts: Tim Slade (filmmaker and producer), Monika Milosavljević from the University of Belgrade, Çiğdem Özkan Aygün from the University of Istanbul, Giovanni Fontana Antonelli and Claudia Cancellotti from the association ARCHI.Media Trust ONLUS, Andrea Balbo, from the University of Geneva, Paolo Brusasco from the University of Genoa.

The permanent seminar series intends to contribute to the university community’s task of providing methods and critical tools for understand the violent return of war in our daily lives, with the correlated pollution of information sources and the tendency to simplify ethical and political judgement by taking uncritical stances, disregarding the constitutional repudiation of war and stigmatising pacifist thought.
