The University promotes the free dissemination of research results on the web. Open access (OA) is a movement born to make the costs of scientific research sustainable. It promotes free online access to scientific information by allowing the reuse of it.
More and more funding entities require that articles from funded research and data used during the same research be available online for free.
Below are the major sources of research repositories of the University of Siena.
OPEN ACCESS TO SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS AND OPEN RESEARCH DATA
Publications institutional repository
USiena Air is the open-access institutional archive of the research products of the University of Siena which allows the archiving, dissemination and enhancement of the scientific research products developed within the institutional activity of the University. USiena Air is synchronized with the MIUR teacher website and integrated with international editorial and bibliometric information. The University of Siena uses the CRIS IRIS (Institutional Repository Information System), developed by CINECA based on the international technological platform DSpace. All the publications of UNISI authors are available on the online portal:
Open Access: Unisi initiatives
On this web page about Open Access some videos tell our researcher’s experiences in free online publications by “transformative agreements” (TA). Unisi researchers indeed can freely publish articles taking advantage of some TA agreements with publishers that include the OA publications in the subscription fees.
Unisi researchers can also apply for special funds for open access publication process, as described in this Regulation (Regole per il supporto al processo di pubblicazione ad accesso aperto – 2023).
USiena Press
USiena Press is the University of Siena’s public and non-profit publisher.
This is the last in order time of its initiatives to promote open access to scientific information, as well as joining the International Open Access Week and dedicating a working group and a webpage to support OA.
A handbook to orient researchers.
To help researchers to deal with OA issues, especially related to the Horizon Europe programme, the Italian Agency for the Promotion of European Research (APRE) published the handbook
S-légami! Open Access – Manuale d’uso per ricercatori.
This document could be helpful during the whole project cycle, from the writing phase to the management and reporting periods.
It has been online since April 2022 and it is the second and updated version written with the collaboration of many Italian research institutions, including the University of Siena.
